The good, the bad and the statistics

Hello all.  We thought we’d write one final post with some thoughts and figures to wrap up the trip.

The good

  • Seeing Chantal‘s family in Quebec City.
  • Seeing Jonty’s family in Calgary and Canmore.
  • Reading your comments.
  • Meeting friendly folks along the way and having no unpleasant encounters.
  • Seeing Jonty’s kindergarten teacher and parents’ friend, Arlette, in Ottawa.
  • The cost of gas and food in the US.
  • Never being forced to change plans due to weather (no impact from floods, fires or tornadoes).
  • Having good weather overall.
  • Seeing all the incredible scenery – e.g., the Rockies; the northern shore of Lake Superior full of lovely, sandy beaches and towns perched lakeside; the rolling prairies and badlands of the northern States.
  • All the towns and cities we visited that exceeded our expectations – e.g., Winnipeg, MB, North Bay and Perth, ON, Neuville, QC, Fargo, ND.
  • Returning to Victoria – how lucky are we to call Vancouver Island home!
  • Getting Misty to walk on-leash comfortably after a few weeks – she would meow at the door of the boler every morning to go for out for a walk first thing.
  • Having lots of time to read.
  • Finding Chantal’s residences in Winnipeg (during her time in Katimavik) and Montreal (when she was in University).
  • Watching movies and series in the evenings – a camping tradition of ours.
  • Receiving no emergency calls regarding Jonty’s dad or Chantal’s dad.
  • Neither of us feeling the need to retain a divorce lawyer upon our return.

The bad

  • Driving too fast on the 50 km gravel road to our campsite at the Moosomin Regional Park, SA, causing visible damage to the front of the freshly painted boler.
  • RV Parks that were not maintained (luckily, we only encountered two or three of those).
  • Driving in Toronto GTA (the speed and congestion).
  • Not having time to go to Edmonton on the return leg.
  • Numerous bug bites.
  • Learning of the death of Jonty’s lifelong friend, Sean Janzen, two weeks before the end of the trip.
