July 30, 31 (days 60, 61) – Ottawa, ON

On the 30th, Jonty visited Arlette Franciere, his French and English teacher from Kindergarten (56 years ago now!), with whom he recently reconnected during his dad’s 100th birthday celebration.  Arlette, who became a visual artist after moving on from teaching Kindergarten, is married to poet, Henry Beissel, a friend and former colleague of Jonty’s father at the U of A in Edmonton in the ’60s. Unfortunately, Henry fell recently and was hospitalized, so Jonty was unable to visit with him in person.

On the 31st, we (Jonty and Chantal) had planned to visit the National Gallery in Ottawa but, around 9 AM, since Jonty was bleeding profusely from his forehead, Chantal strongly suggested we visit the Emergency department at the Ottawa Hospital instead.  The doctor used “skin glue” rather than stitches to seal the large gash on Jonty’s forehead, so he would not have to return to have the stitches removed. The doctor also recommended changing the story to a more exciting one from what actually happened that morning when Jonty stood up abruptly into one of the sharp corners of an open window frame on the trailer after untangling Misty’s leash from beneath it.

The Beauty (Arlette) …
… and the Beast! (post clean-up, pre-glue).
Good to go.
The culprit!

    1. Thanks Susan! It was best case scenario all around, really, except for it not happening in the first place, of course. It wasn’t a travel day for us, it was relatively early in the day, and the Ottawa Emergency wasn’t too busy. And basically no pain even after the adrenaline wore off. Hope you’re having a good summer.

      1. Well that’s good at least!
        The summer is flying by!
I’m off to see my son in the States where their weather is predicted to be 100+ Fahrenheit. Ugh.

  1. Watch out for those sharp window frames and have a safe trip home.
Wow how time flies ! I was surprised and pleased to see you guys have started the return journey back homeward now. See you when you are back in Victoria.

  2. Nasty cut! Good old super glue to the rescue. 🤣. I am enjoying your travel chronicles and look forward to hearing more when you return home.
